Auburn, California
Saturday, April 7, 2018: G20’s Emily Hawgood (Beatrice, Zimbabwe) captured the women’s crown in 7:44:25 hrs at one of America’s oldest trail races, The American River 50 Miler. Since 1980, the AR50 has been a classic for endurance runners as it winds around Folsom Prison to Folsom Lake and up the American River to the Auburn, affectionately known as the “Endurance Capital of the World.”
Emily took the lead from the start and never let it go. Three days of rain in California made for very wet trails, which toughened runners’ efforts on the trails. Coming through Granite Bay (~mile 30) in around 4:10 hrs, she had a 1 mile lead on second place and extended that on the trails that wander around the lake to the last 1500′ climb – a tough uphill to the finish where the Auburn Canyon Overlook greets all competitors completing the course.
Next up for Emily will be the June 2nd 56K Madeira Skymarathon on the Portuguese island of Madeira, just off the coast of Africa.
